The Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands lie off the coast of Ecuador, six hundred miles off the mainland coast. The twenty two main islands and dozens of more small islets
and rocks consist of over three thousand square miles of land, spread over 20,000 square miles of ocean. The capital of Galapagos Province is Puerto
Baquerizo, found on San Cristobal. Puerto Ayora, on Santa Cruz Island, is the commercial center of The Galapagos Islands.
Areas of the Galapagos Islands
If you visit The Galapagos Islands, you are likely to visit several different areas while you're there. Some of the larger islands have the modern
necessities you'll need from time to time, like restaurants, hotels, stores and rental businesses. Other islands have the real treasure, peace and a
chance to get close to nature and observe some rare wildlife. We've divided the Galapagos Islands into four sections of islalnds, based on location in
the chain of islands. For your travel planning, each section listed carries a brief description of the major islands in that group. For boaters, you
also get a page for Landings, so you know ahead of time whether you can land, and how to land your boat.

How to Exlpore the Galapagos Islands
The Galapagos Islands are a major treasure of the world, in so far as natural resources and diversity of species have become crucial to the
survival of our planet. Ecuador created Galapagos Islands National Park to protect these amazing and wonderful islands and their rare species.
Throughout the years in the past humans have handed down plenty of destruction and introduction of non-native species. The Park system is doing its best,
along with international conservation groups, to reverse the destrution, and Galapgaos residents welcome responsible eco tourism to their islands. With
this in mind, please observe these guidelines when visiting The Galapagos Islands so that we can all continue to help the islands heal and prosper.
- Do not bother any wildlife
- Walk and hike on trails only. If you stray from marked trails, you'll crush vegetation and cause erosion, and destroy habitat.
- No smoking in The Galapagos Islands National Park, covering 97% of the land mass in the archipelago.
- Don't take anything out of the park that you didn't bring in. Buy your souvenirs in the shops and just take pictures.
- Of course do not litter!
- Hire a guide, it's required and they can show you so many things.
